Seme Orphanage, Kenya

Details from the visit to a Kenyan Orphanage

During a recent trip to Kenya, Keith had the opportunity to visit a local orphanage—an experience that left a lasting impression. The children were warm, welcoming, and full of energy, despite living with only the most basic necessities.

Keith was shown where the children slept and ate, and he witnessed first hand how their meals were prepared with limited resources. Yet even in these modest conditions, the sense of community and resilience was unmistakable.

One of the highlights of the visit was playing football with the children. Their single ball was worn, deflated, and on the verge of falling apart, but their enthusiasm never dimmed. Laughter filled the air as they played, proving that joy doesn’t require perfect circumstances.

Keith also introduced the children to a hand puppet—something none of them had ever seen before. Their reactions were full of wonder and excitement, turning a simple puppet into a magical moment.

With support from Te Papa, Keith was able to gift the orphanage several brand-new footballs. The children’s gratitude was immediate and heartfelt. For them, the new balls weren’t just toys—they were a chance to play, compete, and dream with renewed spirit.

This visit served as a powerful reminder of the impact small acts of kindness can have, and the incredible strength and positivity found within communities that have so little yet give so much.
